I am a visual
artist whose work is influenced by my religion. Whether I
am creating a Ketubah (Jewish marriage contract) or secular
art, the rich traditions and rituals abundant in Judaism deeply
affect my work.
I work in a plethora of mixed media — anything I can
get my hands on to convey my message in my art. I have used
materials such as handmade paper, natural fibers, metal and
wood. As a Ketubah artist, I combine text and artwork to symbolize
a couple’s union. As a secular artist, I focus on topics
that touch me in my everyday life and create both functional
and visual art pieces. Often times, hebrew text and Judaic
symbols find their way into all of my work through theme,
color, and design.
The process of creating a Ketubah is both challenging and
rewarding. I regard each Ketubah as a symbol of a couple’s
unity. I interview the bride and groom to be and we collaborate
on ideas and images that are specifically meaningful to them.
For this reason, each Ketubah is unique.
The scope of my commissions also includes artwork honoring
newborn babies, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and interfaith
and same-sex marriages. I have also created art for public
and corporate spaces (please click on the fine art button
to find out more).
In 2003 I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the
University of Minnesota and since then, I continue to take
workshops and art classes. This ongoing learning process provides
the “fuel” necessary to maintain fresh, creative
ideas. As my studies continue, my work constantly evolves.
